Naming your 2021 Friesian Foals

Letters for naming your 2021 Friesian foals are P, Q, R, or S.

Naming tips from the FHS Purebred BBR…

2.6.1. Naming the Foal– Each calendar year foal names must begin with specific letters designated by the KFPS (official mother stambook). Names must be relatively simple, ideally consisting of a single word. Abbreviations of farm names or initials are not allowed to precede a name, but may follow the name if approved by the FHS. Names need not be Dutch. Once processed by the FHS, an owner requesting that a name be changed, can only have this done with the approval of the FHS Board of Directors. If the FHS Board approves the change, the fee listed on the Fee Schedule must be paid in full before new registration papers will be issued.

2021 Inspection Tour Planning

FHS is now planning for 2021!

We are now accepting site hosts for the 2021 Inspection Tour. Please consider hosting an Inspection Site. No experience is necessary, it doesn’t cost the host anything, and the FHS will be there to support you!

We are also accepting entry applications. NO ONE will be charged ANY money until their Inspection site is confirmed. We are hoping that COVID-19 will be manageable and will allow the 2021 Inspection Tour to move forward.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or input, please feel free to contact the FHS via email at FHS Activities or phone the office Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm in the Central Time Zone.

We wish everyone the best of health and encourage you to stay safe.

Sincerely,

FHS Board of Directors

Testing for Dwarfism and Hydrocephalus is Mandatory

1. Any DNA testing done requires the additional tests for Dwarfism and Hydrocephalus if these tests are not already on file for your horse. This is for both Purebred and Part-Bred horses. Testing will not be required for foals that are a result of two verifiably negative parents. In addition, geldings are also exempt. Foals that have one positive parent will have to be tested as well as any foal whose parents have not been tested. The fee for the two tests is $60 and will be passed on to the owner as a part of the registration fee or other DNA testing. This is a one-time fee.

2. Any Friesians added to the FHS database and/or our DNA database at UC Davis must have testing for Dwarfism and Hydrocephalus done or on file before they can be added. This is most often encountered when parentage verification is needed for a horse to be registered. Again, if the Friesian parent(s) of the horse being registered have tested negative, then the horse to be registered does not need to be tested.

3. Horses registered prior to 1/1/18 that achieve a predicate have a transfer of ownership, or any other situation where issuing an updated registration document occurs, must have the additional testing for Dwarfism and Hydrocephalus done or already on file. Geldings and horses with Friesian parents that have tested negative are exempt.

4. Stallions used for breeding have to be tested immediately if they have not already been tested. Invoices for testing will be sent to respective stallion owners. Stallion results will be posted in the Friesian Brief and on the FHS website.

5. It is beneficial to have breeding mares tested since their test results, if negative and bred to a negative stallion, will exempt the resulting offspring from testing. This will save the $60 testing fee for any offspring of the pairing.

Voluntary testing can be initiated by contacting the FHS office and you will be invoiced based on your specific needs. Once the invoice is paid, testing will be done. Results will be provided to the owner. As always, call the FHS office if you have questions, since situations may be different from horse to horse.

Attention Stallion Owners

If you have already had this testing done for your stallion, please provide the results to us so that we can get that information into our database. The results for stallions are published in the Friesian Brief each month as well as on the website.

Status of Current Breeding Stallions

* A Stallion who is a carrier may be used for breeding as long as the mare is not a carrier of the same genetic anomaly.
